Prison Life Essay

Continue drafting and gathering evidence for your essay to be written in the class later. Use the essay outline drafting sheet to guide you.

Here are some ideas to shape your thesis for Topic A or B

Topic A

Possible Thesis:

There are certain factors that you can use to determine how a prisoner will behave in prison such as thier age, the type of crime committed and their personality.

Next, you would use two of the Inmates to prove how this is true. You can use your interpretive skills for a start, but then gather evidence to support your assumptions about the Inmate.

Find evidence (online or at www.cjbrief.com) :
  • about the type of crime they committed and what type of people do those crimes
  • about the age group
  • about the personality or ethinicty or job profession the Inmnate is part of or from

Topic B

Possible Thesis

Women in prison face different issues in prison than men, and thus, they have developed different lifestyles and ways of interacting with each other in the prison system.

Next, you will support your thesis by finding evidence in the book and elsewhere to show how this is true.

To start you need to choose aspects to compare, for example:

  • structure of relationships
  • reasons for having relationships
  • what comforts/basic needs the relationships provide

So, your essay will show what the relationships are like for women in prison and how they are different than the men's. Keep in mind that your focus is on the women, so you should only briefly mention issues related to the men to highlight how they are different.

Interpretive Question #2 - pages 32 - 68

This question is based on the passage in Fahrenheit 451 that begins on page 58:
"Ah," Beatty leaned forward in the faint mist of smoke from his pipe....

And ends on page 59:"That's you, Montag, and that's me."

Use the entire passage above to answer the question.

Question:

In what way are the opinions and ideas Beatty expresses in the passage true for most people, at some point, in some way? Isn't it possible that you have felt some semblance of those opinions or ideas -- whichever ones apply -- at some time in your life? Write a response that will be at least two paragraphs, discussing specifically two (2) examples of how you have shared in some way the ideas or opinions Beatty talks about in the passage from the novel. You will hand this in. Do not post it on the site.
